Capa cache discovered!

A cache of rolls of Robert Capa’s negatives, shot during the Spanish civil war and long thought to have been lost during Nazi occupation of Paris, have been discovered.

The New York Times:

“TO the small group of photography experts aware of its existence, it was known simply as “the Mexican suitcase.” And in the pantheon of lost modern cultural treasures, it was surrounded by the same mythical aura as Hemingway’s early manuscripts, which vanished from a train station in 1922.

The suitcase — actually three flimsy cardboard valises — contained thousands of negatives of pictures that Robert Capa, one of the pioneers of modern war photography, took during the Spanish Civil War before he fled Europe for America in 1939, leaving behind the contents of his Paris darkroom.

From what experts have been able to piece together from archives and the research of Mr. Whelan, the biographer (who died last year), Capa apparently asked his darkroom manager, a Hungarian friend and photographer named Imre Weisz, known as Cziki, to save his negatives in 1939 or 1940, when Capa was in New York and feared his work would be destroyed.”

Silvergrain (eco)chemicals

Silvergrain.org publiceerde al een tijdje recepten voor ontwikkelaar, fix en andere prehistorische vloeistoffen. En ondertussen kan je die recepten, ook alweer een tijdje, al klaargemaakt kopen bij digitaltruth. Tot zover niets speciaals. Maar nu komt het (tromgeroffel): alle recepten zijn ecologisch, en dat is goed nieuws voor iedereen die zich ongemakkelijk voelt bij al die chemicalien. De ontwikkelaar blijkt op basis van vitamine C te zijn gemaakt. De wereld is er weeral een beetje beter door geworden.

Edward Burtynsky’s horror landschappen hebben er in november een film bij gekregen: Manufactured landscapes.
Jennifer Baichwal heeft, volgens het Burtynsky concept een documentaire gedraaid. De documentaire toont de invloed van de mens op het landschap en de natuur.

The Photographs Not Taken is a collection of essays by photographers about the times they didn’t use their camera. This collection is a series of photographs not taken with a camera, but, instead, lived and remembered. Here the basic set of rules that apply to the making of a photograph are put into reverse; instead of looking out into the world through a camera lens, this series of essays looks directly into the photographer’s eye and mind and focuses on where the photographs come from.

The photograph has been stripped-down to its most simple and primitive form: the idea, instinct, reaction, the before; while simultaneously opening the door for reflection, meaning, content and the after. Each photographer has been asked to abandon the familiar tools needed to make a photograph, camera, lens, film, all digital equivalents, etc, and now make a “photograph” with another set of tools: the memories, experiences and poetry of the world that didn’t go through the lens, the negative photographs, the anti-photographs, the photographs not taken with a camera but with the heart and mind.

European starlings have a way of appearing in unexpected places — the United States, for example, where they are not native but owe their origin to a brief reference in Shakespeare’s “Henry IV, Part 1.” In 1890, a drug manufacturer who wanted every bird found in Shakespeare to live in America released 60 starlings in Central Park. After spending a few years nesting modestly under the eaves of the American Museum of Natural History, they went from a poetic fancy to a menacing majority; there are now upward of 200 million birds across North America, where they thrive at the expense of other cavity nesters like bluebirds and woodpeckers, eat an abundance of grain — as well as harmful insects — and occasionally bring down airplanes.

Weegee in Foam

WEEGEE - Uit de COLLECTIE BERINSON -

Foam eindigde het jaar 2007 met een tentoonstelling van het werk van de legendarische fotojournalist Weegee. Weegee is de ultieme chroniqueur van de schaduwzijde van New York gedurende de jaren dertig en veertig.

Hij toont een stad getroffen door economische malaise en in de ban van werkeloosheid, armoede, misdaad, geweld en corruptie. Het merendeel van Weegee’s foto’s zijn genomen gedurende de nacht en worden gekenmerkt door genadeloos flitslicht, harde contrasten en subtiele kadrering. Ook nu nog hebben de foto’s een kracht en directheid die zelden overtroffen is. Sommige beelden van slachtoffers van misdaad, nachtbrakers, kruimeldieven en daklozen, zijn uitgegroeid tot ware klassiekers.

Weegee’s oeuvre omvat echter veel meer dan alleen beelden van misdaad en geweld. Zo heeft hij ook een scherp oog voor de positie van de buitenstaander en goed gevoel voor sociale verschillen. Zowel zijn oeuvre als zijn tot de verbeelding sprekende persoon heeft ongekende invloed gehad op generaties na hem. Foam toont 231 vintage prints, waaronder vele unieke afdrukken. Alle werken zijn afkomstig uit de collectie van Hendrik A. Berinson.

“Correspondence” by Paul Greenleaf

The ongoing series Correspondence, combines ‘found’ photography with new photographic work. An initial discovery of old postcards at Greenwich market inspired Paul to retrace and photograph the depicted locations.

‘I aim to highlight how the land has changed physically, by neglect, ‘development’ or sometimes coastal erosion, and the way the landscape has changed culturally, illustrating changing trends. The work exposes clichés within these rose-tinted tourist towns and offers a modern day alternative to the picturesque.

60 Jaar MAGNUM Photos

Het Stedelijk Museum CS (Amsterdam) presenteert een overzicht van fotoagentschap en persbureau MAGNUM dat in 2007 60 jaar bestaat.
Opening: donderdag 7 februari van 17.00-19.00 uur, Stedelijk Museum CS

MAGNUM levert tot op heden foto’s die zich wereldwijd verankerd hebben in het collectieve geheugen, zoals de beelden van de intocht van het Russische leger in Praag, 1968 en de demonstraties op het Plein van de Hemelse Vrede in Beijing, 1989. In de tentoonstelling is per jaar de geschiedenis van MAGNUM zichtbaar aan de hand van foto’s, boeken en teksten en kan het publiek werk zien van 83 fotografen, waaronder Robert Capa, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Carl de Keyzer, Martin Parr, Susan Meiselas en Leonard Freed.
